Monica Putnam Doss

Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED)
 

Since 1986, Monica Doss has served as President of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), a non-profit organization founded in 1984 to stimulate the creation and expansion of high-growth entrepreneurial businesses in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina. Doss is responsible for spearheading the direction, operation and overall management of the organization. During her 18-year tenure, the CED has grown from a 125-member organization with an annual operating budget of $35K, to become the largest entrepreneurial support organization in the , with more than 1000 member companies, and a budget of $1.8 million.

Doss has received both local and national recognition as an industry leader.  She received the  National Entrepreneur of the YearÒ Award in the Supporter of Entrepreneurship category and serves as a National and Regional Judge for the annual competition. Doss is actively involved in numerous and diverse professional and educational organizations. Doss chairs the WUNC-FM Community Advisory Board, the Entrepreneurship and Technology Committee for Research Triangle Region's Future Cluster Competitiveness Initiative and is chairman of the board of the Kansas City based Entrepreneurial Education Foundation. She serves on the board of SEBIO and is a Director of the North Carolina Bioscience Fund. Doss frequently works with the State Science and Technology Institute (SSTI), the
National Governor’s Association Center for Best Practices, and other economic development groups as a coach and speaker.

 

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1952, Doss moved south in 1970 to attend Florida State University where she received a BA, Magna Cum Laude, in English, and an MA in American Literature. Prior to joining CED, she came to North Carolina in 1985 to serve as Director for the North Carolina Art Society, the membership arm of the North Carolina Museum of Art. Prior to that, she spent 10 years as a circulation director for several national and regional publications in Florida, New Orleans, and Alabama. Monica and her husband, Jim, live in Orange County and have one son who attends UNC-Chapel Hill.
