The community role of the Coastal Studies Institute is considered critical to its identity.  UNC-CSI will endeavor to be a valued member of the northeastern North Carolina community, one that local residents and government agency officials can call upon as a resource for technical and scientific expertise.  UNC-CSI also works with the local communties on special projects, efforts on agri- and ecotourism, sustainable community design and land use planning.

UNC-CSI will offer a varied set of programs and resources to increase the knowledge and appreciation of coast and ocean ecosystems among K-12 students, retirees, tourists and citizen groups.

Bowsertown Landfill

Bowsertown Landfill Reclamation: A community project that focuses on the reclamation of a former landfill and tranfer station for community use.  This site began as a waste disposal site in the early 1960s, became a transfer station for construction and demolition debris, and was permanently dismantled in 2007.  The planning and funding for this project continues to move forward.  This reclamation project is a collaborative effort with the Manteo Rotary Club, Dare County, the community and the UNC Coastal Studies Institute.  >>MORE INFORMATION
